First Day of Volunteering!..

What a great day! I woke up this morning and was excited and slightly nervous, I’ll be honest, about my first day of volunteering. It’s been a long process but it finally came to fruition and I’m so glad.  My shift was scheduled from 9am to noon at a long-term care centre in the tuck shop. If you remember your childhood summer camp days, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about when I say tuck shop! This particular shop is where the residents can go to buy little treats, have coffee, snacks, lotto tickets, buy gifts, buy a few pieces of clothing or personal items and socialize. The best part is that ALL of the proceeds go back into the program for the people that reside there!

I was introduced to Michael and Shirley who were also volunteers and my trainers. They were SO AWESOME and SO KIND and they made me feel welcome right away. I currently work with patients in a medical setting who have had traumatic brain injuries and I really wanted to volunteer again in a similar setting because it’s what I know…but this is totally different and totally fun! I had an absolute ball and got to meet some really awesome people, both residents and workers. We served up coffee, snacks and a lot of smiles today.

It was such an awesome experience and I can’t wait to go  back next week. If you get the chance to volunteer, please do so! It could really change people’s lives and change YOUR life, just by offering your time and kindness to others who could really use it.
