Myth vs. Fact…

Has anyone ever told you that the best way to help a backache is to rest? Well, it really depends on the type of backache, so for all intensive purposes, we are going to say that it’s not sciatica or a bulging disc sort of backache. We’re talking about your every day, run of the mill tension in your lower back. Let me get back to the point…

The myth vs fact we’re talking about is, the best way to cure a backache is to rest…well I’m here to tell you that that’s a myth! So many of us suffer with back tension and it’s prevalent in society today because of all of the time that we spend sitting at desks, driving to work and watching t.v. But by briskly walking for just 20 minutes, it’s just as effective in soothing lower back pain as participating in WEEKS of physical therapy! This was proven by a study done at a Tel Aviv university.

It works because walking exercises your stomach muscles in the same way that a physical therapist would prescribe muscle strength training exercises for your core. Sitting puts as 2 times as much pressure on your spine as standing and pressure compresses and irritates the nerves. Set a timer to go off every hour to remind you to stand up and walk around.

Myth vs. Fact…

Today’s MvsF: Electric toothbrushes clean better than manual ones. So, what do you think, it this a myth or a fact? The results are in and here’s the answer!

I’ve had an electric toothbrush for years and I’m happy to say that yes, this is a FACT, electric toothbrushes DO clean better than manual ones. Can you believe that most people only brush their teeth once a day and most of us only brush for about 45 seconds?  So unless you’re the world’s greatest brusher do yourself a favour and trade in the manual brush for an electric one. Now there is a catch, the electric toothbrush you purchase should have bristles that rotate in alternating directions. This ensures that more plaque is removed and also means that gum diseased is reduced.Remember that dentists recommend brushing twice a day for at least two minutes and flossing at least once a day. Myth vs. Fact…

So you’ve heard me say before that I’m currently training for a 30 km race in our city. It’s on April 3rd which is coming up quickly-am I prepared? Yes and no. Yes to the fact that I have been training diligently and trying to eat well; no to the fact that the biggest part of this race is going to be the mental side of it…and that’s the part I might not be ready for yet. Also no to the fact that I’m exactly like every other person who has off days and binges or skips running that day. It’s a really tough thing to do-not only the 30 km but life in general. Sticking to goals, dragging your ass out of bed when all you want to do is sleep in, eating properly and preparing meals, being organized, getting places on time and showing up to do the work with 100% effort. Keeping your house clean, taking care of your family and everyone else as well as yourself is a huge job and we don’t necessarily have time to spend hours on the treadmill-literally and figuratively speaking. So today’s MvsF is a helpful one,(and a two-parter), for those who have always wondered…

Does Cross-training burn more fat than a steady aerobic routine? AND Does interval training burn extra calories?

Now some people out there may be saying, “DUH!” but there is a ton of misinformation out there especially about exercise, health and nutrition.

So let’s use myself as an example; Obviously I need to run as part of my training program BUT it shouldn’t be the only thing I do and I should also incorporate interval training. Let’s start with the answer to first question; Cross-training DOES burn more fat than a steady aerobic routine. Benefits of Cross-training are plentiful; it helps you work all of your body parts, it keeps things interesting, it reduces injury to a specific part from over use, and it makes people feel better about themselves! There was a study done at the U of Alabama where they took 2 groups of women and in one group assigned them to only do step aerobics and the second group did cross training like boxing, jumping rope, lifting weights etc. After 12 weeks and the SAME amount of hours logged in the gym, the cross trainers came out ahead. They reported feeling better, looking better and greater overall health compared to the cardio only ladies.

Answer to question number 2-YES, interval training burns more calories! What that means is that adding more intense bursts of exercise to your routine will have you killing it in your bikini by May:) Here’s a very simple example: Run for 2 minutes at 80% of your maximum effort then walk for 1 minute.If you really want to ramp things up and have some fun, add in 15 seconds of running at your 100% effort at the end of the 2 minutes at 80%. Repeat for 30-45 minutes and you’ve had a great workout that will help build endurance and improve your performance! This awesome plan allows you to burn MORE CALORIES IN THE SAME AMOUNT OF TIME! Who doesn’t want or need that little tidbit of info?ALWAYS CHECK WITH YOUR DOC before starting any type of exercise program.

There is so much misinformation out there nowadays who knows what to believe exactly? There are certain celebrity docs who preach one thing on their television show and then a week later completely contradict the very thing they were so passionate about. It drives me insane! The same thing happens with certain magazines, they have the latest fad diet on the cover, “The Coffee Diet! Lose 40 pounds in an hour with no exercise!” And in the very next issue it states how too much coffee is bad for you, coffee causes insomnia, heartburn, acid reflux, anxiety, jitters, restlessness and if you drink 7+ cups a day it can cause pregnancy!…Wait, I think I’m getting that mixed up with Vodka…Anyways, the point is, it is SO hard to separate truth from fiction so that’s what this ongoing segment will help us do.

Here is today’s Myth vs. Fact!

Stress and Spicy foods can cause ulcers:

A lot of people will be reading this and say, “YES! THIS IS SO TRUE! IT HAPPENED TO MY UNCLE VINNY!” Well, unfortunately, for them and for Uncle Vinny this is a MYTH. 

H. pylori is a bacteria that causes infections and also causes around 80-90% of stomach/intestinal ulcers. The way to treat most infections is with antibiotics. The way the virus is contracted is usually from food, utensils or water but it can also be spread through saliva/fluids of infected people. Yuck. Other ulcers are commonly caused by sensitivity to NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs) such as ibuprofen and aspirin. So what are you supposed to do? Well the good news is, you can keep eating Jalapeños straight from the jar and putting Frank’s Red Hot on everything. The other good news is that you can go talk to your doctor and he or she will be able to help you with your concerns and questions and will be able to give you more information. 

Stress may not cause ulcers but let’s face it, too much isn’t good for you, plus it can cause a whole host of other problems. So try and relax would ya?
